Annunciata nel gennaio 2012 come branca siriana dello Stato islamico dell’Iraq, guidata da Abu Mohammad al Jolani (Ahmed al Sharaa). 1

Nel 2013 al Jolani respinse l’annuncio con cui Abu Bakr al Baghdadi fondeva al Nusra nell’ISIS e giurò fedeltà al leader di al Qaeda Ayman al Zawahiri. 2

Human Rights Watch ha documentato la partecipazione di al Nusra, insieme ad altri gruppi, a esecuzioni e abusi contro civili durante l’offensiva del 2013 nelle campagne di Latakia. 3

La sua iscrizione nell’elenco dell’ONU (QDe.137) è stata cancellata il 27 febbraio 2026. 4
