Anunciado en enero de 2012 como la rama siria del Estado Islámico de Irak, bajo el liderazgo de Abu Mohamed al Jolani (Ahmed al Shara). 1

En 2013, al Jolani rechazó el anuncio de Abu Bakr al Bagdadi que fusionaba al Nusra con el ISIS y juró lealtad al líder de Al Qaeda, Ayman al Zawahiri. 2

Human Rights Watch documentó la participación de al Nusra, junto con otros grupos, en ejecuciones y abusos contra civiles durante la ofensiva de 2013 en la zona rural de Latakia. 3

Su inclusión en la lista de la ONU (QDe.137) se retiró el 27 de febrero de 2026. 4
