Mohammad Qanatari has been Syria’s chargé d’affaires in Washington since January 2026. 1 In July 2026 he became the subject of allegations by U.S. journalist Lindsey Snell.
The allegation
Published allegation
Snell published a clip from an interview she said she conducted in 2016 with a masked Jabhat al-Nusra member, and said the man was Qanatari. She also accused him of being part of the group around her detention by al-Nusra. 2
What is established
According to a later report, Snell herself acknowledged that she has no conclusive evidence that Qanatari ordered or personally carried out her abduction. 3 The file is therefore presented as a journalistic allegation supported by video material, not as a judicial finding.
Supported by independent sources
Independent sources document that Qanatari was a member of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham’s political affairs department and worked for the Salvation Government’s Ministry of Information under the name “Mohammad al-Sadiq”. 4
